Industry Fact Sheet
The SIA was created in 1977 by five ground-breaking innovators who stand as hallmarks in the industry of microelectronics:
- Wilfred Corrigan, LSI Logic Corporation
- Robert Noyce, Intel Corporation
- Jerry Sanders, Advanced Micro Devices, Incorporated
- Charles Sporck, National Semiconductor Corporation
- John Welty, Motorola, Inc.
Currently, the SIA has 14 board member companies. They are Advanced Micro Devices, Altera, Analog Devices, Freescale Semiconductor, IBM, Intel, Intersil, LSI Logic, Micron Technology, National Semiconductor, NVidia, Texas Instruments, Qualcomm and Xilinx.
There are over 70 SIA member companies that range from fully integrated manufacturing companies, to fabless, to foreign based with fabs in the U.S., to foundries, to companies that support our industry (i.e. law firms, investment banks, etc.).
SIA represents 85% of the U.S. semiconductor industry.
The SIA is a member driven, not for profit trade association that employs 15 persons. The SIA is headquartered in San Jose, California with a multi-association office in Beijing, China.
The SIA has three types of membership: Charter, Manufacturing Associates, and Corporate Associates.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the semiconductor industry employs a domestic workforce of approximately 233,000.
In 2005, the semiconductor industry made over 90 million transistors for every man, woman and child on Earth, and by 2010, this number should be 1 billion transistors.
U.S.-based semiconductor manufacturers are located all over the world, with over 65% of manufacturing capacity in the United States. Over half of the industry’s workforce is located in the United States.
